Feeling far from God

How to pray when God feels far away

When God feels far away, tell Him so. Honest lament is prayer: the Psalms are full of people asking “How long?” Keep showing up with short, honest words, lean on Scripture when your feelings are quiet, and remember that His nearness doesn’t depend on what you feel (Romans 8:38–39).

A prayer for this moment

The kind of verse and prayer Cast gives you for what you share.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Psalm 34:18 NIV

God, I don’t feel You right now. I’m not sure what changed, and part of me is afraid You’ve stopped listening.

But Your Word says You are close to the brokenhearted, and that nothing can separate me from Your love. So I’m choosing to trust what You’ve said over what I feel. I’m still here, and I want to know You again.

Draw near to me. Help me notice You in small things today. Thank You for staying, even when I can’t tell. Amen.

There are seasons when prayer feels like talking to the ceiling. You used to feel close to God, and now you feel nothing, or you’re not sure you ever really did. It can bring guilt, confusion, or a quiet drifting away.

This experience is old and common. Many saints have written about it. Feeling far from God isn’t proof that He has left. Often it’s a place where faith grows roots instead of leaves.

A simple way to pray

  1. Say how it really feels

You don’t need to pretend. “I can’t feel You right now” is an honest prayer, and honest prayer is the kind God invites. Read Psalm 13 and notice that it is in the Bible on purpose.

  2. Borrow words from Scripture

When your own words run dry, pray a psalm or a single verse slowly. Let Scripture carry you on the days your feelings can’t.

  3. Keep it small and steady

Closeness to God grows more like a friendship than a lightning strike. A few honest minutes most days does more than one big effort. Show up, even briefly.

  4. Look back for His fingerprints

Remember times He has answered or carried you. Write them down. Looking back often shows a faithfulness you couldn’t see in the moment.

Bible verses for when God feels far

  • Psalm 13:1 NIV
“How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?”

Lament is faithful prayer. This psalm ends in trust.

  • Psalm 34:18 NIV
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

He is near even when nearness is hard to feel.

  • Jeremiah 29:13 NIV
“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

A promise for anyone still looking.

  • Psalm 139:7 NIV
“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?”

There is no place too far for Him to be.

  • Deuteronomy 31:8 NIV
“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

His presence is a promise, not a feeling.

  • Romans 8:38–39 NIV
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Nothing on the list can separate you, including this season.

Questions

Why do I feel far from God?

There are many reasons: grief, exhaustion, busyness, unconfessed hurt, depression, or simply a season of spiritual dryness that many Christians describe. Sometimes there’s a clear cause, and sometimes there isn’t. Either way, God hasn’t moved. Bringing the distance to Him honestly is the best first step.

How can I feel closer to God?

Closeness usually grows through small, steady habits: honest prayer, slow reading of Scripture, worship, and time with other believers. Pray short and often rather than waiting for the perfect moment, and look back regularly at how He has been faithful.

Will Cast help me feel closer to God?

Cast is designed to make honest prayer simpler and more regular, which is how many people find their way back to God. It helps you put words to what you’re feeling, starts every prayer from Scripture, and gives you a quiet moment to sit with Him. It isn’t a substitute for church or community.
