When you don’t know what to pray

What to pray when you don’t know what to say

When you don’t know what to pray, start with one honest sentence about what’s on your heart, or simply say, “God, I don’t know what to say.” Then read a short verse and pray it back to Him. Romans 8:26 promises that the Spirit helps us when we don’t know what to pray, so a clumsy prayer is still heard.

A prayer for this moment

The kind of verse and prayer Cast gives you for what you share.

“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”
Romans 8:26 NIV

God, I don’t really know what to say. I’m not even sure where to start.

But You know what’s on my heart before I say it. Thank You that Your Spirit prays for me when I can’t find the words. Here is what I can say: I need You. Help me with what I’m carrying today, and help me learn to talk with You.

Thank You for listening, even to a prayer like this one. Amen.

Many people want to pray but freeze when they try. Maybe you didn’t grow up praying, or you feel like you’re doing it wrong, or your situation is too tangled to put into words.

Prayer isn’t a performance. It’s honest conversation with a Father who already knows what you need. You can start badly. Most people do.

A simple way to pray

  1. Start with what’s true right now

Say one honest sentence: what you’re worried about, grateful for, or confused by. “I’m tired.” “I’m scared about Mom.” That’s a prayer.

  2. Pray Scripture back to God

Pick a verse and turn it into a prayer. Psalm 62:8 becomes: “I trust You. I’m pouring out my heart to You. Be my refuge.”

  3. Use a simple shape

If you need structure, try this: thank Him for one thing, tell Him one thing that’s hard, ask Him for one thing you need. Then say amen.

  4. Let it be short

Jesus warned against piling up words to be heard (Matthew 6:7). A short, honest prayer is not a lesser prayer. Come back tomorrow and do it again.

Bible verses for when words won’t come

  • Romans 8:26 NIV
“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”

You’re not praying alone, even when the words run out.

  • Psalm 62:8 NIV
“Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.”

Prayer as pouring out, not performing.

  • Psalm 139:4 NIV
“Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely.”

He understands what you mean, even if you can’t say it.

  • Matthew 6:7–8 NIV
“And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”

Fewer words are fine. He already knows.

  • Hebrews 4:16 NIV
“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

    Come with confidence, not perfection.

  • Mark 9:24 NIV
“Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!””

One of the most honest prayers in Scripture, and Jesus answered it.

Questions

Is there a wrong way to pray?

Jesus warned against praying to be seen and against empty, repetitive words (Matthew 6:5–8), but He never asked for polished prayers. Honest, humble prayer, however simple, is the kind He welcomes.

Is it okay to use an app to help me pray?

Christians have always used help to pray: the Psalms, the Lord’s Prayer, prayer books, and written prayers from others. An app like Cast is a tool in that tradition. It offers Scripture and a starting point, and the prayer is still yours to pray.
