Grief

How to pray when you’re grieving

When you’re grieving, pray however you can: with tears, a single word, or silence. Tell God what you’ve lost and how much it hurts, ask Him for comfort for today, and let others pray for you when you can’t. Jesus wept at His friend’s grave (John 11:35), and He is close to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18).

A prayer for this moment

The kind of verse and prayer Cast gives you for what you share.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Psalm 34:18 NIV

God, it hurts. I miss them more than I know how to say, and some moments I can barely breathe.

You are close to the brokenhearted, and right now that’s me. I don’t understand all of this, and I don’t have to pretend I do. Hold me in it. Comfort me today, just for today, and give me what I need to get through the next hour.

Thank You for the love that makes this hurt so much. Thank You for weeping with us. Carry me until I can walk again. Amen.

Grief changes everything, including prayer. Some days you may want to pour out everything to God. Other days you may not have the energy for more than a sigh, or you may feel angry that He let this happen.

All of that can be brought to Him. Grief isn’t a lack of faith. It’s the cost of love, and God meets us inside it rather than asking us to move past it quickly.

A simple way to pray

  1. Come as you are

You don’t need composed sentences. Tears, silence, or “God, help” all count as prayer. Romans 8:26 says the Spirit prays for us when we don’t have words.

  2. Tell Him what you lost

Name the person or the thing you’re grieving, and what you miss. Remembering out loud, in God’s presence, can be both painful and healing.

  3. Bring the hard questions

If you’re angry or confused, say so. The Psalms and Job are full of honest questions. God can hold your questions without letting go of you.

  4. Let others carry you

On days you can’t pray, let a friend, pastor, or family member pray for you. Sharing a prayer request is not weakness. It’s how the church carries each other.

Bible verses for grief

  • Psalm 34:18 NIV
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

He comes closer, not farther, when we break.

  • Matthew 5:4 NIV
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”

Mourning is met with a promise.

  • John 11:35 NIV
    “Jesus wept.”

He knew what He was about to do, and He still cried with them.

  • Psalm 147:3 NIV
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”

Healing is slow, and He is gentle with it.

  • 2 Corinthians 1:3–4 NIV
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”

The God of all comfort, for all our troubles.

  • 1 Thessalonians 4:13 NIV
“Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope.”

We still grieve, but we grieve with hope.

Questions

Is it okay to be angry with God when grieving?

Many faithful people have been. Job, David, and Jeremiah all brought anger and confusion to God in prayer, and those prayers are in Scripture. Telling God how you feel is a way of staying in relationship with Him, not leaving it.

How long does grief last?

There’s no set timeline. Grief often comes in waves for months or years, and it can return at anniversaries and holidays. If grief feels unbearable or you’re struggling to function, please reach out to a pastor, a grief counselor, or a doctor.
