Can’t sleep
Prayers for when you can’t sleep
When you can’t sleep, pray slowly and simply: give God the thoughts that are keeping you awake one at a time, thank Him for one thing from today, and repeat a short verse like Psalm 4:8 as you breathe. The goal isn’t to pray perfectly but to rest in the One who never sleeps (Psalm 121:4).
A prayer for this moment
The kind of verse and prayer Cast gives you for what you share.
“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.”
Lord, it’s late, and my mind won’t settle. I keep thinking about today and worrying about tomorrow.
I give You this day, the good and the hard parts. I give You what I’m afraid of in the morning. You never sleep, so I don’t have to keep watch. In peace I will lie down, because You make me dwell in safety.
Quiet my thoughts. Slow my breathing. Let me rest in You tonight. Amen.
Night has a way of making every worry louder. The house is quiet, the day is over, and your mind decides now is the time to replay conversations and rehearse tomorrow.
Prayer is a gentle way to hand the day back to God. You’re not trying to force sleep. You’re reminding yourself that He is awake, so you don’t have to be.
A simple way to pray
Give Him today
Walk through the day briefly. Thank Him for what was good, and hand over what went wrong. It’s done, and it’s His now.
Hand over each thought
When a worry surfaces, don’t argue with it. Just name it and give it to God: “This one is Yours.” Do it as many times as you need.
Breathe a verse
Pick one short verse and repeat it slowly with your breath. “In peace I will lie down and sleep.” Let the words do the work.
Rest in the quiet
If sleep doesn’t come right away, that’s all right. Lying still in God’s presence is still rest. Let the silence be company instead of pressure.
Bible verses for sleep
Psalm 4:8 NIV “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.”
Short enough to breathe in and out.
Psalm 121:3–4 NIV “He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.”
He keeps watch so you can close your eyes.
Proverbs 3:24 NIV “When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.”
A picture of the rest God wants for you.
Psalm 63:6 NIV “On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night.”
Wakeful hours can become time with Him.
Psalm 3:5 NIV “I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.”
Written by David while he was in real danger.
Psalm 127:2 NIV “In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat— for he grants sleep to those he loves.”
Sleep is a gift, not a reward you earn.

Questions
Is it okay to pray in bed?
Absolutely. David wrote about remembering God on his bed through the night (Psalm 63:6). God isn’t concerned with your posture. A quiet prayer in bed is a beautiful way to end the day.
What if I fall asleep while praying?
Many people do, and there’s no need for guilt. Falling asleep while talking to God is a picture of trust. If sleeplessness is ongoing, it’s also worth talking with a doctor.
