Stress

A prayer for when you’re stressed and overwhelmed

When you’re stressed, pray short and honest: tell God everything that feels like too much, ask Him to carry what you can’t, and ask for wisdom for the one next thing. Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come to Him for rest (Matthew 11:28), so you don’t need to have it together first.

A prayer for this moment

The kind of verse and prayer Cast gives you for what you share.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28–30 NIV

Jesus, I’m stretched thin. There’s too much to do, and I feel like I’m failing at all of it.

You said to come to You when I’m weary and burdened, so I’m coming. I set down this list in front of You. Take what was never mine to carry. Give me strength for what is, and wisdom to see the next right step.

Let me rest in You, even here in the middle of it. Thank You that Your yoke is easy and Your burden is light. Amen.

Stress builds in the body before we notice it in the mind. Tight shoulders, a short temper, the feeling that you’re always behind. It’s easy to push prayer to the bottom of the list, right under everything else you’re not getting to.

But prayer doesn’t have to be one more task. It can be the moment you stop carrying everything for a few minutes and let someone stronger hold it.

A simple way to pray

  1. Stop and breathe first

Before you say anything, take a few slow breaths. You’re not wasting time. You’re giving your body a chance to catch up with your soul.

  2. Unload the whole list

Tell God everything that’s pressing on you, big and small, in no particular order. The deadline, the conversation you’re dreading, the dishes. Nothing is too ordinary for Him.

  3. Ask Him to carry what you can’t

Some of it is yours to do. Some of it never was. Ask God to take what’s out of your hands, and to give you strength and wisdom for the rest.

  4. Pick the one next thing

End by asking what the one next step is. Not the whole plan, just the next faithful thing. Then do that, and trust Him with the remainder.

Bible verses for stress

Jesus’ own invitation to the overwhelmed.

Questions

How long should I pray when I’m stressed?

As long as you have. A one-minute prayer offered honestly is better than a long one you keep putting off. Many people find that a few quiet minutes, once or twice a day, makes a real difference.

What does the Bible say about stress?

Scripture doesn’t use the word, but it speaks to the experience often: Jesus calls the weary to rest (Matthew 11:28), the psalmists cast their cares on God (Psalm 55:22), and Paul describes being hard pressed but not crushed (2 Corinthians 4:8). The consistent invitation is to bring the weight to God rather than carry it alone.
